Prostate Cancer Rehabilitation
The prostate is a gland located under the bladder in a male pelvis. It assists the male reproductive system and is approximately the size of a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra (the tube which empties the urine from the bladder), which is why urine flow can be disrupted when the prostate is enlarged.
The male pelvic floor is a sling of muscles which makes up the base of the pelvis and includes sphincters (openings) around the urethra and anus. The pelvic floor muscles help control bladder and bowel function to maintain continence, and erectile function.
When the prostate is surgically removed (prostatectomy) it is common to leak urine (incontinence) and lose erectile function. Specialist men's health physiotherapy can help retrain the pelvic floor to improve continence and erectile function.
โ
Often men are doing their pelvic floor exercises incorrectly. We can provide feedback on correct completion of these exercises using a range of specialities including real-time Ultrasound for biofeedback.
